The Vegan Community of Eastern Iowa stands against racism and in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. Our group is committed to promoting health, food security, environmental protection, and the sanctity of the interconnected web of life. We recognize that people of color are often most affected by issues of food insecurity, poor health care and climate change, in addition to systemic violence. We support activism, education, and consciousness-raising in this and in other arenas. In this moment of historical importance, when outrage over the savage killing of George Floyd (another in a long line of police killings of people of color) has reverberated throughout the world, we affirm the rights of all to live fully and free from fear.
Similarly, in this month of pride for LGBTQ* people, VCEI steps up as allies to support the people of the LGBTQ community. We care about inclusivity, diversity and healthy communities, about the rights of living beings to be free from harm. Our stated purpose is to promote the joy, compassion and life-enhancing possibilities of a vegan lifestyle, and we believe such joy and possibility should be the right of all. Whom one loves, what gender or orientation one identifies as are questions of individual biology, and no one should be subject to discrimination or violence on those or any other grounds.
"People eat meat thinking they will become strong as an ox, forgetting that the ox eats grass."

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has"
- Margaret Mead
